Santa Rosa Women Win State Championship in Dramatic Fashion!

Bear Cubs take 4-3 overtime victory over Santiago Canyon

Sacramento, CA (CCCAA) – Santa Rosa Junior College defeated Santiago Canyon College in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon, with a 4-3 victory in overtime at Cosumnes River College. The Bear Cubs were led by the State Championship MVP, Cara Curtin, who scored all four SRJC goals.

Curtin struck first blood in this championship game off an outlet pass that she beat SCC’s keeper to, shooting it over her head and scoring in the 22nd minute of the game. SCC then tied everything up with a well placed center by Bianca Frontino to Kristen Blogg, who knocked it in. The Hawks later took a 2-1 lead off of a PK shot by Janelle Hanna.

It looked to be over at 2-1 with the clock winding down but in the 88th minute SRJC had a chance at a corner kick. The kick was denied by SCC but not before a hand ball was called on the Hawks in front of the net, forcing a penalty kick. Curtin stepped up and delivered a ball into the lower right side of the net to force overtime, consisting of two 15 minute periods.

10 minutes into the first period of OT, Curtin fired a ball from the top of the box that sailed in, giving the Bear Cubs the 3-2 lead. This lead held up until five minutes left in the second overtime period, when Jennifer Martin took a shot from 1⁄4 field into the top far side of the net, leaving Tara Funk, SRJC’s keeper, no chance at it. Just three minutes later, with only two minutes on the clock, the speedy Curtin took over again. At midfield she had control, dished it off to her sister, Lauren Curtin, and took off running. Lauren took a couple dribbles and placed a pass perfectly to lead Cara so it was just her and the keeper. Cara threw a fake and touched the ball in the right side of the goal to give Santa Rosa the 4-3 lead and their first ever CCCAA Women’s Soccer State Championship in this finale thriller.
