Mt San Antonio 3-peat in State Championships!
Hartnell falls in hard fought 0-1 loss
Sacramento, CA (CCCAA) – Mt. San Antonio College claimed their third consecutive CCCAA Men’s Soccer State Championship on Sunday at Cosumnes River College. They did so by defeating Hartnell College in a hard fought battle that ended, 1-0.
The first half of the men’s championship resulted in no points on the board due to great keeper play by both Hartnell’s Domingo Rodriguez and Mt. SAC’s Alfredo Ontiveros. Both made some outstanding saves and great step ups on opposing forwards and corner kicks throughout the day. But in this evenly matched game, Mt. SAC got more shots on goal and put slightly more pressure on Hartnell resulting in their lone goal by Freshman, Daniel Amaya, who launched a ball from about the quarter field mark, off the bottom portion of the crossbar, and squeezing it in on the 63rd minute of play.
Both teams had their chances today, the closest for Hartnell came on the 52nd minute of play when forward Marvin Milligan put on some moves through midfield and fired a shot that just missed off the right post. With just two minutes of play remaining Hartnell had one last chance with a penalty kick caused by a slide tackle in the back of Milligan. Forward Ivan Campas took the kick but was denied by Ontiveros. Mt. SAC prevailed and now have their third state title in a row.
Having scored the only goal of the game, the Mounties Daniel Amaya was named the Men’s State Championship Most Valuable Player.
